McKenna, a native of Whitehorse, Yukon, shone brightly in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers. On a recent episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, experts weighed in on this very topic. Tyler Yaremchuk, joined by Steven Ellis and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton, discussed the level of worry surrounding McKenna's performance.
Yaremchuk kicked things off: "Gavin McKenna is a hot topic. He's the projected number-one overall pick for 2026, but he's not dominating college hockey as expected. Are we concerned about his start at Penn State?"
Ellis responded with a calm analysis: "Not at all. Penn State as a team is struggling. They've faced tough competition, including a 7-1 loss to Michigan and a shutout by Michigan State. It's a young team still finding its feet. McKenna's 15 points in 14 games as a 17-year-old is exceptional. However, players like Macklin Celebrini and Adam Fantilli, in similar situations, have performed significantly better."
Ellis continued, "Part of the issue is Penn State's depth. McKenna doesn't have the luxury of playing with high-end talent. Additionally, he's not consistently driving the play. His goal-scoring pace has dropped significantly from the WHL to the NCAA. It's a big adjustment, but he needs to adapt and take control. If he were on a stronger team, like Michigan State or Michigan, I believe his point total would be much higher."
