The name 'John Wick' has become synonymous with a real-life controversy in Mamelodi, and at the heart of it is Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Accusations are flying, and the stakes are high. But what's the truth? Let's dive in.
At the center of this storm is a claim made by North West businessman Brown Mogotsi. He alleges that Matlala, a security company boss, is the infamous gunman known as “John Wick.” This is a serious accusation, especially considering the context.
Mogotsi made these claims during his testimony before the Madlanga commission of inquiry, where he also accused Matlala of corruption and bribing high-ranking politicians. The details are starting to pile up, and the picture is getting more complex.
The “John Wick” in question is alleged to have assassinated members of the Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi, Tshwane, back in 2021. This gang had been terrorizing the community since 2018, extorting shopkeepers for protection money. The situation was tense, and the identity of 'John Wick' became a hot topic.
During his testimony before parliament’s ad hoc committee, Matlala denied the claim. When questioned directly by EFF leader Julius Malema, Matlala unequivocally stated, “No,” to being John Wick and to any involvement in killing people or accusations of murder.
Regarding his relationship with Mogotsi, Matlala clarified that they are not friends. He claims to have met Mogotsi in December when Mogotsi offered to assist with his SAPS issues related to a lucrative tender, pretending to work in the office of the suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu. Matlala admitted to communicating with Mogotsi to “entertain” him, allegedly on the advice of former police minister Bheki Cele. He also stated he paid Mogotsi between R100,000 and R150,000 to fund travel arrangements for individuals attending the ANC’s January 8 event.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Adding more fuel to the fire, Matlala's appearance before the committee comes amid serious allegations. KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi previously claimed that Matlala is part of a “Big Five” cartel involved in criminal activities. Crime intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo also named Matlala and Katiso “KT” Molefe as alleged central figures in the operation.
When questioned about his alleged involvement in drug cartels and criminal syndicates, Matlala denied any involvement. The plot thickens.
And this is the part most people miss...
The implications of these accusations are far-reaching. If true, it suggests a dangerous level of corruption and criminal activity. If false, it could be a smear campaign.
