Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy's Return Uncertain
The Boston Bruins are facing uncertainty regarding the return of their defenseman, Charlie McAvoy, who suffered an injury during a game against the Canadiens. McAvoy was hit in the mouth by a slap shot from Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson during the second period of the game, causing him to leave the ice with blood pouring from his face. The team's head athletic trainer, Dustin Stuck, rushed to his aid, and McAvoy eventually made his way off the ice, with teammate Nikita Zadorov searching for some of his teeth.
McAvoy's condition is still being evaluated, and the team is unsure if he will require surgery to repair any damage. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, McAvoy received the green light to travel back to Boston that night, but he still has a long way to go before being cleared for game action. McAvoy has a history of injury misfortunes, with the Bell Centre being a particularly challenging venue for him.
During the 4 Nations Faceoff tournament in February, McAvoy injured his shoulder while playing for Team USA, which required a stay at Massachusetts General Hospital, an irrigation and debridement procedure, and a course of antibiotics. This injury, along with a subsequent infection, kept him out of the game for the rest of the season, with McAvoy only playing 50 games.
This season, McAvoy has been a key player for the Bruins, recording 14 assists over 19 games while averaging 23:46 of ice time per contest. His chemistry with teammate Zadorov has helped stabilize the team's defense, with the Bruins outscoring opponents 5-2 in the duo's 132 minutes of 5-on-5 play this year, according to National StatTrick.
With McAvoy sidelined, the Bruins will have to adjust their lineup, with Henri Jokiharju joining Zadorov on the top pair, and Mason Lohrei and Jonathan Aspirot remaining in place on the third pairing. Additionally, top-six winger Viktor Arvidsson also had to exit Saturday's game with a lower-body injury and was placed on injured reserve.
The Bruins have made further adjustments to their roster, recalling forwards Matej Blumel and Riley Tufte from Providence. To accommodate these changes, Casey Mittelstadt was placed on injured reserve alongside Arvidsson, while defenseman Jordan Harris was put on long-term injured reserve after ankle surgery in October. Johnny Beecher was also held off the ice on Monday, with the team considering potential roster moves, including whether McAvoy will need to be placed on injured reserve or long-term injured reserve.
The Bruins' lineup changes have had a significant impact on their performance, with Arvidsson's speed and goal-scoring ability being a notable loss. Center Elias Lindholm, who has been out since October 30, was also seen participating in practice drills, with a potential return to the team on their upcoming West Coast trip still uncertain.
